The $40,000 Monstera Devil Monster: Was the Name Changed to Boost Its Price?

In the world of rare houseplants, few plants have reached the legendary status of the $40,000 "Monstera Devil Monster." Coveted for its extraordinary variegation and mysterious origins, it has captivated the hearts (and wallets) of collectors around the globe.

But what most people don’t know is that this plant wasn't always known as the "Devil Monster." Originally, it was called the “Circuit Monstera,” a name that referred to the unique venation patterns running across its leaves. So why the name change, and where did this elusive plant really come from?

The plant first made its media debut at the Bangkok International Exotic Plants Show #4 on March 1-3, 2024.

That's where we first covered the plant, for its INSANE price tag of $39,000 but turns out, it had been around since 2023, with likely origins of China!

The Monstera devil monster was FIRST (by our research) shown on instagram by user emgarden_tim, a China-based plant grower and collector.

As the date in the lower right shows, September 13, 2023.  And notice they're using a different name: Monstera Circuit -- also notice how young and immature the Monstera leaves are. Again, showing its newness.

This was done again in December 2023 by the same account:

It does really look to be of White Monster decent, but the story goes, it could have been from any Monstera seed growers.

The same account also offers it for sale in the middle of 2024, for $9,650 per LEAF.

The devil Monster captivated the Rare Plant and Monstera loving community, and likely will continue to. Let's just hope the price comes down a bit!

Here are its Specs:
